Softball Nova Scotia Mourns the Passing of Hall of Fame Umpire Max Pye

Softball Nova Scotia is saddened to learn of the passing of Max Pye, a highly respected umpire, dedicated leader, and member of the Softball Nova Scotia Hall of Fame. Max passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at the age of 82.

Throughout his many years of involvement in the sport, Max made a lasting contribution to softball officiating, both provincially and nationally. His dedication to excellence, professionalism, and the development of fellow umpires earned him the respect and admiration of countless individuals throughout the softball community.

In 1988, Max achieved his International Level 5 umpire accreditation, a significant accomplishment that reflected his knowledge, commitment, and expertise in officiating at the highest levels of the game.

Max also served as Umpire-in-Chief for Softball Nova Scotia, playing an important role in supporting and developing officials throughout the province. His passion for umpire education and development extended beyond Nova Scotia, as he later served on Softball Canada's Officiating Development Committee, helping strengthen the sport at the national level.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Max was inducted into the Softball Nova Scotia Hall of Fame, an honour celebrating his dedication and lasting impact on the game.

Beyond his accomplishments on the diamond, Max was remembered for the lifelong friendships he developed through softball. His involvement in the sport was about more than calling balls and strikes; it was about building relationships, mentoring others, and giving back to a game he cared deeply about.

Away from softball, Max enjoyed a distinguished career in education, serving as principal at Dr. Arthur Hines School in Summerville, Falmouth Elementary School, and Brooklyn District Elementary School before retiring in 1996.

Max Pye's legacy will live on through the many umpires he helped develop, the friendships he built, and the positive influence he had on softball throughout Nova Scotia and across Canada.

On behalf of Softball Nova Scotia's Board of Directors, staff, officials, athletes, and the entire softball community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Max's family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest in peace, Max. Your dedication to softball will not be forgotten.
